I'd like everyone to outline how they learned / prefer to create characters. How are ability scores rolled? Do you get to choose everything like gender and class and such? How do you roll ability scores - are there any special handicaps?

Also - how much money are you used to starting with?

Once we have an outline of everyone's methods, we can figure out what we'll do as a compromise.

Justin here. This is my online name in pretty much everything, so if you see anyone on Steam, DeviantArt, etc... named CriticalQuit, that's me.

Anyway, when we're just doing standard characters, I do the traditional roll 4d6, drop the lowest one, take the 6 numbers and assign them as desired. But I usually set the bar at nothing below 10, and if all the stats are too low I let a few get rerolled or just changed to be higher.

As for everything else, class and character details and such, completely up to the player. Random can be rolled, or not.

we used the standard array with the ability to move around 2 points, but i know how to roll stats. and we got to choose everything, usually limited to certain books, though.

and money is up to the DM. we usually just agree to a fair amount.

CriticalQuit

I didn't know 3.5 had a standard array, I thought that was 4th edition.

Anyway, money usually isn't the biggest issue, we just pick the weapons/supplies we need and take the difference.

My character, as a monk, needs no weapons or armor, but I get very little starting money so it'll just be used for supplies.

Atreus

well, we played mainly 4e anyways, so.

CriticalQuit

I started off with 3.5, then did 4e, I must say I prefer 3.5, 4e tries really hard to be like modern online games, and it's just not as interesting.

Anyway, who is that? David?

Atreus

yeah, it's me
and i like 4e D:

CriticalQuit

it was okay, but it just didn't feel like D&D to me.

We're definitely a 3.5 group, so prepare for things to be a lot more complicated but allow for more possibilities. Have you seen the list of existing spells? There's a LOT of spells in 3.5

Yes, Atreus is David.

And as for me - ability scores were done by rolling 4d6, rerolling 1's, and then dropping the lowest score.

And money we were all given 150 gp for weapons and armor, and 100 gp for supplies (Plus any money left over from the 150gp, but you /cannot/ take supply money and use it the other way around.)

(And now I'm off to actually play a bit with my friends. Be back in a bit, guys. Very Happy)

Right. I get 250 for supplies then, unless you want me to pay for my fists XD I might be carrying supplies, since I don't have to use any of my weight carried for weapons/armor, although I have to keep a light load to maintain my monk powers.

We'll see what happens. I'm sure someone will play a heavier fighter. I know Matt Graydon says he wants to be a wizard, specialty beign Transmutation, dropped schools being Necromancy and illusion.

Hey, what's up? A new blood eh? Good, people who are new are great for assigning to roles which need to be filled after experienced people pick their preferred classes.

Hey, thanks! ...I think? :p
Well, anyway. I generally prefer to work with some sort of magic. If it'd work, I'd sorta prefer a bard or a wizard.

maptools comes with a lot of premade tokens (the avatars). you can still make your own though.

Matt already called wizard, and since he's played with me for quite a while, he knows it and gets priority. You can be a bard though.

Hey David, can you be a heavy fighter type class, Fighter or barbarian or paladin or something? We need someone with some armor XD
