I decided to make this particular thread so we can all help each other develop and ready our characters, whether it be with data or with the character itself.

I'll help others, but for now, I ask you guys for advice. Is there any other race you guys would suggest for Monk, or should I stick with human like I was going to?

The monk that I played with was a half-orc. It was pretty interesting.

In my opinion, the best race for a monk would (as far as personality goes) be an elf. Being a monk requires total devotion, patience, and training. Elves, with their naturally long lives and calm minds, have no problems devoting decades or even centuries to an art or cause to get things right.

Honestly, after looking through all the race books, I'll stick with human. Dragonborn is cool, but a little unrealistic and a little vindictive.

Elf would be good but they tend to prefer to stay in the forests or work with magic. They tend to care not about perfecting themselves, but changing the world around them. Also, the reduced Constitution might screw me over. Half-Orc, well, i just don't like playing that race XD. I'll stick with human. The extra feat and skill points make up for the lack of other perks.

Definitely going with human. Simplest and makes the most sense. my monk powers will make up for the boringness of the race.

So, Ian, what are you going to be?

Don't know yet - I'm thinking /maybe/ something magic oriented. Or I might stick with my comfort zone and be a Rogue (or Druid, as I'm finding out I like it a lot). But I'm also really excited to play this Fighter/Barbarian that I've made, so I might make something similar to him...

~~~
Dragonborn?
Which reminds me, I need to make a thread for what books we'll be referencing as we play. I already know that you reference extra books (i.e. That True.. Pure. Divine.. Something, book).
A heavy fighter would certainly be useful, since right now I'm the only melee character with David as a cleric. Although if David's Dming, it leaves us with a healing vacuum, since our only healer would be our Bard.
Dragonborn, of Races of the Dragon. Normal humanoids who undergo a ritual of devotion to Bahamut and become dragon-like justiciars.
I have literally every book as a PDF, and I think Matt has a copy of that, but I don't think I can send them to you guys, it's about 4 gigs total.
True. But like I said - I'm perfectly okay with us choosing characters based on desire, and NOT what we have or don't have. It makes it more interesting, doesn't it? If we end up not having a cleric or any type of healer, then yes, the game will be DAMN hard, but we'll have to alter our strategies to accommodate, which is kind of cool.
I see. I guess it'll be up to the DM's discretion what books we can and can't reference. I'd completely understand if we were, for example, limited to the basic classes and races, at first, just for the sake of making this easier to get started.
And I can acquire any book we need - and easily give it to whoever needs it.
We'll be spending a lot of money on potions if we end up doing that. Thank goodness Matt's not barring Abjuration. And who knows, maybe his extra Transmutation spells will give us a good enough bonus to avoid being hurt too bad. I know at least that I can heal myself once I reach a certain level.
Well, I do want to just stick with Monk, and human, but I MIGHT go to some of the Class books for feats. They have some AMAZING feats in the class expansion books.
I have all books, i just don't think I can share them.
Just don't get too attached to any of the Feats. The DM will have to decide of using them would unbalance the game too much or not.
Right. No worries, as a monk there are a lot of them in the normal PHB that I want first. particularly Spring Attack, which has 3 pre-req feats anyway.
Sounds like you're pretty well off. What are your 1st level spells? And what skills and feats are you looking at? Some of the metamagic or item creation feats maybe?
Speaking of which, should I look into more movement and stealth stats? I might be our only stealthable character other than MAYBE the bard, and I'm the one who doesn't need to wear armor so I can probably jump/climb the best.
Just gonna add a bit of an OCD note:
Unless otherwise confirmed - our characters would have no way of knowing what spells another character had. Smile
Unless we look in his spellbook, right? XD
Hey Ian, what do you think of the idea of my monk's skills making him our stealth character? Between the lack of armor encumberance, high dexterity, and boosted speed (at higher levels) i can be a good scout.
And the 400ft teleportation at later levels?
Um, fuck yeah? Very Happy But will he have the skills?
And yeah, if we look in his spellbook or ask, but we haven't done that. Razz
Lol.
Monks do have Hide and Move Silently as class skills, alongside all the other movement skills (Balance, Climb, Jump, Tumble, Swim) and all the perception skills (Spot, Search, Listen), so I'd be a good scout, although I would have no way of dealing with traps.
We'll have to observe what he uses. And also, any arcane scrolls we find go right to him, he can copy them into his spellbook and permanently learn them.
That is kinda awesome. Very Happy
And that's not true. ANY character can search for traps with a DC of 20 or less.
You might be right about disabling them, though.
The parkour-style skills along with the unarmed attacks and other various Monk attacks... wow, Monks really do focus on perfect self.
Well, we can try to check for them at least. And avoid them. We're going to be very weak to traps, I think.
True, true. But I'm pretty adamant in my choice of monk, and as the person who's been playing the longest out of all of us, I think I get to pick (I started in my freshman year and I'm a senior now)
Drake picked a bard? o.o I hadn't noticed - but *shrug*, whatever happens happens.
We'll just get /damned/ good at ranged attacks if we don't have a cleric. Very Happy
